Interview With Oh Snapp!!

There is something I am hugely excited about, that is Oh Snap's tour to Australia, ever since I first posted his free EP on the blog I have been in love with his production and rapping. Last week I was lucky to interview him over the phone, here is just some snippets from the interview, I MUST thank pulse radio for hooking me up with this interview, check out their site for an online radio station that features music, interviews, competitions and everything music related.

For those who don't know Oh Snapp!!, describe your sound and what you're all about.

To be honest the way the world is screwed up right now, I am just trying to make party music that people enjoy, whether its hip hop or dance music, the line is blurred by that. I just want people to shake, and dance to forget about their problems. I first started out as a rapper, when I was like 15, so my style is based a lot on the gangster rap music scene.

Who would you say your biggest influences are?

I grew up on gangster rap, like NWA and artists like that. Inspiration wise, I love Crookers and the new bread of electro producers, and a lot of hip hop artists like Redman, Wu Tang Clan and all of the old school rappers.

You have had over 20 000 downloads of your music online, did you expect this success when you first begun?

Not at all, it all started as a joke. I recorded my first stuff last December, and I just started messing around with my sound. I was at a big festival called Coachella in California, and I saw the differences in the scene in America, in the east coast its big baggy pants where in the west coast its skinny jeans, so I just made a song that made fun of these Hipsters. I originally wanted to make a song that was funny to make fun of stuff, and everything just snowballed from there.

You have had a lot of blog love over the past few months, what are your thoughts about the influence of music blogs on the music industry?

I think that in the dance community the blogs are invaluable, I think that the best way for DJs to get new music, is definitely through the blogs. 10 years ago you couldn’t play stuff that people just produced; it really makes music more accessible. From a DJ standpoint you’re able to play brand new stuff and the latest stuff all the time. It’s the best way for up and coming producers to get their music, if it wasn’t for blogs I wouldn’t have been able to get my stuff out there.

How was it recording a mix as apart of the NLLR project?

The guy who runs organises it all hit me up on Myspace and it all went from there. It was really cool; I just wanted to play some fun stuff, tracks that people would enjoy rather than banging the hell out of people. It was great experience.

Some of your fans might find it weird that you have been signed to an up and coming record label from Australia called Sweat It Out, how did that come about?

A friend of mine turned me onto Gameboy/Gamegirl and I soon found out that some of my stuff kind of sounds like them, we have the same vibe. Hip hop over dance music vibe party vibe stuff. At the time I was looking for a way to distribute my music out there, so I hit up sweat it out on myspace and we got talking, and we figured out that it would be a good way to get my music out there, and I guess the rest is history

I'm pretty excited to witness the Live Oh Snapp!! experience for your Australian tour, what tricks have you got up your sleeves for us?

That is all hush-hush for now; I am working on a few funny things for people to enjoy. All I am going to say is a quote from Rodney Dangerfield “if you want to look skinny, you have to hang out with fatter people”.

Are you looking forward to your tour to Australia?

Oh yeah, I am so excited. I have never been to Australia, and I just love to perform. My buddy Hostage just got back from Australia and he said the crowds just go crazy for good music. I am keen to go check out one of those Australian Rules football games.

What was the most bizarre thing that has happened at one of your gigs?

I played at a gig at El Paso Texas, and this drunk girl jumped onto one of the tables where my decks were, and she didn’t understand the music was skipping when she jumped up and down, and I got on the mike and yelled out “This is here first remix ever”

What’s some of the best things about touring around the world as a DJ?

You get to see the world, and make people have a good time! I love to perform live; it’s my favourite thing about music.

Finally, for those who are undecided about coming to see your act when you’re out here, talk it up for us.

Expect the unexpected, despite my size I have Mariah Carey style choreography, I am the fat white Usher. I’ll be playing some crazy stuff in my sets that nobody has so watch out!

Oh Snapp will be touring the east coast of Australia from August 28 - September 6, check his myspace for the tour dates. For Sydney people email us to get on the guestlist.

Cheater’s Rap

John Edwards talked about Dad’s mill,
While sleeping with a chick off the pill,
He lied and fibbed to the MS press,
And, awoke early to preen and dress.

John's wife, Elizabeth, ate the lie in ‘06,
But supported John in Iowa while sick,
They stole Hillary’s honest votes daily,
And laughed on cue while hiding Rielle.

Why did John lie like a cheatin’ rat ?
No “New Deal” for the average Democrat,
While Obama and Hill fought on the stump,
John watched Rielle grow a bump.

John begged the papers, don't print the story,
Knowing Iowans condemn the whorey,
Come on, Katie Couric, be a good sport,
And don't be tipping off the Drudge Report.

Now John’s love child is common news,
And Fred Baron has money to lose,
Rielle, now nursing, has jetted away,
Even Geraldo has joined the fray!

John’s affair has hurt his poor kids,
More than Clinton’s cigars ever did,
A sordid tale that some call a crock,
The only winner, a loser named Barack!

Like dogs in heat, Edwards did pant,
Defined forever, just like Hugh Grant,
Tabloids paid to get the sleaze,
Is it John’s baby, mister please?

Vote for John Edwards, give me chills,
Meet you for sex in Beverly Hills,
John, don’t need to prove you ain’t a gay,
Just pony up to compare your DNA.

See Barack in Hawaii like Bobby Vinton,
Unaware the DNC plans to elect Clinton,
Edwards may face time from the tax man,
But not if a pardon is part of Obama’s plan.

While Elizabeth cried over her brood,
Baby mama with John was not a prude,
Gone the innocent days of Tom Sawyer,
John gettin’ love like a real trial lawyer.
