Photo: http://www.hobogestapo.com/With New Years Eve just around the corner, it is time to reminisce, it was a year that could be remembered for many different things, such as Heath Ledger Dying and his amazing portrayal of the Joker in the latest Batman film. On a sporting side of things, the 2008 Olympics were amazing, especially the freaks that are Michael Phelps and Ulsan Bolt, nothing really happened in Football that was important so we will move along and on a political side of things all I have to say is Barrack Obama. As much as I would love to ramble on about my personal highs and lows of the year, including festival highlights, personal milestones etc etc, instead I will do the cliched thing and post my favorite tracks of the year, as well as one or two artists that blew me away.
I will start of with the three best DJs I saw all year, this will be based on mixing technique, how they play to the crowd and just the general vibe they put across.
Internationals -
1. Dave Nada - Anybody who knows me or who frequents the blog will know of my respect for Dave, I was lucky enough to see him 4 times this year, and whoa. His show at the Sydney Stereosonic blew away everyone in the room, with people craving more.
2. A-Trak - A really close second, mainly because I only saw him live once. Was the stand out act of Good Vibrations, trumping anyone else on the day, would have preferred him to keep DJing than hearing Kid Sister, but oh well.
3. DJ Craze - Where to begin, it could be his insane scratching ability, crowd presence, or the fact that he played a shit load of quality rap music. Even though it was raining, the crowd still wanted more.
Locals -
1. Act Yo Age - Combine two veterans of the Sydney music scene, and you get Act Yo Age, brilliant combination of Electro, Bmore and Party Tunes, not to mention a killer EP. Constant touring throughout the country, has limited my opportunities to see them, but time after time I have been impressed beyond belief.
2. The Hump Day Project - Another act that are a very close second, most of their tracks I post are hugely popular, and their sets throughout Sydney have created a huge following, stayed tuned in 09 for bigger things.
3. Wax Motif - A surprise entry for me, I have always enjoyed his sets while wasted. A few weeks ago, I was relatively sober, and after hearing some live mash ups, pre mixes and quality mixing, I can truly appreciate his quality.
EP of the year -
I cannot actually figure out which one I like better, so there is a 3 way tie for first. If you do not have these EPs go and buy them, seriously, its worth the money.
Act Yo Age - Hot This EP
Miami Horror - Bravado
Nadastrom - Pussy
Now its music time! Below is a small selection of tracks that either blew me away when I first heard it, or are by artists that really impressed me this year. The only criteria is that I have to have posted it before and can only post one track per artist.
Before Muscles discovered the wonderful world of blogging, and abusing people, he made some pretty good music. His song the Lake always sounded a tad off beat to me, that was until the Jokers Of The Scene recreated it. Back in July I called it my remix of the year, 5 months later and its still definitely up there.

At the begining of this year, a young man by the name of Grum burst on to the scene, his banging tracks helped re ignite my love for hard electro, then in June, Le Castle Vania released his remix of Go Back, holy shit, enough said. This remix made the track more grimy, upbeat and recreated the drop to something inhumane.

Mashup of the year? The Hump Day Project are one of Deckhead's favorites, so its only fitting that one of their tracks makes this list, althought I like whatever I hear from them, it seems the most popular track of theirs is this mash up, of DMX & The Aston Shuffle. Here is the original post which was actually an interview that I did.

Going to Europe was definately a better option than going to Parklife, however their were two artists that I was dirty about missing. They were Diplo & Fake Blood, and by all accounts they were amazing, I didn't get around to posting too much of their stuff, however over the past 12 months their remixes and original works have just blown me away.
Kanye West - Flashing Lights (Diplo Remix)

The Black Ghosts - Any Way You Choose To Give It (Fake Blood Remix)

I like rap music, only when its done tastefully, and not over hyped for no good reason, my favorite rap group of 2008 was definately the Cool Kids, I discovered them after they had toured Australia, which was dissapointing, however for a number of months now I have been listening to them non stop.
The Cool Kids - A Little Bit Cooler

Just because I think Busy P is the cooooooooooooooooolest man in the world, and So Me is an amazing artist.
Busy P - To Protect & Entertain (So Me Girls Get Naked Edit)

Tenzin's remix of Use Somebody belongs in this list, he transforms the track to make it better than the original, since I posted this track less than two weeks ago, and it was really popular on hypemachine I have decided to not Post it. Also Bag Raider's track Shooting Stars would definately be in the top two song of the year, but again, this track is over blogged and I have posted it roughly a month ago.
Finally, don't forget about the Playground Weekender competition it has been getting some good responses, so get in fast before time runs out.
